JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Public Works (DPW) Plumber will work on the installation, maintenance, and repair of potable water tanks, gray water tanks, sinks, water heaters, showers, igloo filling stations, and other plumbing systems on Playa. They will work with the Plumbing Team to de-winterize equipment and tanks in the beginning of the event cycle as well as strike and prepare equipment for storage at Burning Man’s staging facilities at the end of the event cycle.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
General

- Stay informed about and put into action best practices for potable water sanitation and greywater handling.
- Wear your allocated PPE (personal protective equipment) which is specific for the materials you are handling. Let your Manager know if you need replacement PPE.
Operations (50%)
- Work independently and with the Plumbing Crew to install, sanitize, maintain, troubleshoot, and disassemble potable and grey water systems for BRC departments.
- Provide feedback on team logistics; maintain clear communication with the Plumbing Team.
- Collaborate and communicate with the DPW Waterworks Team on shared tasks and resources.
- Be available for scheduled, 24 hour, on-call shifts.
Documentation (30%)
- Keep regular, accurate, and up-to-date logs of work progress and material usage.
- Prepare written feedback for the DPW Utilities Manager describing the successes of the season, areas in need of improvement and suggestions with the purpose of improved overall efficiency for the next year; Submit an end-of-season EMBER Report.
Community Relations (15%)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Fuel Attendant will safely pump and track diesel and gasoline distributed through both the PETROL Depot & Hell Station fuel stations. They will work with other staff to open and close their assigned station each day and interface in a courteous manner with staff, vendors and participants. They will be responsible for accurately entering fuel fill information with both tracking technology and paperwork. This role may assist with setting up and breaking down the fuel stations.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operations (60%)
- Open and close the PETROL Depot or Hell Station in a timely manner, as assigned.
- Pump and track fuel distributed to staff and vendors from the PETROL Depot, or participants at Hell Station as assigned.
- Maintain clear and respectful communication with the DPW Fuel Team, BRC Departments, Vendors, Participants, and Artists.
- Register staff vehicles for fuel as needed at the PETROL Depot, ensuring that they have the correct permission slip.
- Help with the setup and breakdown of the PETROL Depot & Hell Station as directed.
Documentation & Tracking (35%)
- Enter fuel fill information accurately with both tracking technology and paperwork.
- Prepare written feedback for the DPW Utilities Manager describing the successes of the season, areas in need of improvement and suggestions with the purpose of improved overall efficiency for the next year; Submit an end-of-season EMBER Report.
Other Functions & Responsibilities (5%)
- Work with the Fuel Crew to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans.
- Actively participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe worksite using only OSHA approved safety equipment.
- Review and understand the BRC Rain Contingency Plan and Fuel Spill Response Plan and help to execute as directed.

What you’ll do on a typical day:
- Perform routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of class 7 and 8 diesel equipment, forklifts and trailing equipment
- Repair or rebuild all or parts of various equipment systems
- Work in accordance with DOT, EPA, Interstate Authority, OSHA and other rules and regulations
- Conduct safety inspections on equipment and prepare safety documentation as needed
- Maintain proficiency with equipment and technologies that enhance productivity
- Move trailers throughout the property
- Operate a hostler in all types of weather; safely walk and stand for extended periods of time
What you need to succeed at XPO:
At a minimum, you’ll need:
- 2 years of experience in general heavy truck repair for commercial fleet operations
- To obtain EPA HVAC Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Certification within 90 days of hire (ASE, MACS or equivalent)
- A valid driver’s license
- Basic welding skills (Oxy/Acetylene, MIG and ARC)
- Your own hand tools for tractor-trailer repairs
- Basic computer skills
- Availability to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, nights and weekends
It’d be great if you also have:
- Previous or current ASE certifications
- Experience with trailer repair, diesel engine system diagnostics and preventive maintenance for tractor technicians
- Ability to diagnose and repair vehicle air conditioning systems
This job requires the ability to:
- Lift up to 50 lbs. frequently and more than 75 lbs. occasionally
- Safely walk and stand for extended periods of time on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery, including working outdoors in inclement weather
- Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel
